The roof is one of the most important parts of the house which must be regularly maintained and treated since it is always exposed to the elements. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, it is the roof which shields us from extreme heat and cold. Thus the roof may also need some sort of protection and the best possible way to do this is to paint our precious roof.

Painting the roof will of course require you to spend some cash so to ensure you get the right value for your money, you need to be aware of any possible inclusion in the cost of roof painting. The expenses generally consist of painting materials and the labor fee of roof painters.

If money is a big concern, painting the roof may be done on your own, but most homeowners would rather hire professional roof painters not only to do the job correctly but also to avoid the hassles of going up on the roof and being baked under the heat of the sun. Roof painters may charge on per day or per hour basis. Some would charge based on the amount of work to be done based on a signed contract. Roof painters may also paint other exterior surfaces of the house and will offer you a packaged rate for all the painting services.

The materials needed in roof painting will usually be estimated by the roof painters or contractors and you will also be provided with options of the kinds of paint to be applied on your roof. Roof painters will generally know which kind of paint will be the best for the roof.

Paint of course is on top of the list of materials in roof painting. As mentioned, roof paints are not the same. There’s reflective roof paint incorporated with small particles of glass that helps reflect the heat of the sun and thus serve as an insulator for your home. There is also water proof paint, asphalt coating and metal roof paint. Each type of paint has its pros and cons to provide.

To estimate how much painting supplies will be needed, the length and width of the roof are first measured. Paints are usually bought per gallon and the label on the container will tell you how much area can be covered by that gallon of paint. The width and length dimensions must be multiplied with one another to get your roof area. There process of measuring the dimensions is fairly easy you’re your roof is flat compared to measuring a sloped roof. Each sloped side of the roof must be measured, especially if the sides are not of similar size. Roof painters will tell you that you may need more paint if your roof is sloped and has overhang.

Cost estimates by contractors range from hundreds to shocking thousands of dollars. This is why as a budget-conscious homeowner; you may decide to just paint the roof on DIY means. Yet you need to decide based on the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.

I had never heard of painting your roof. I wonder what kind of materials this paint is used on? I have asphalt shingles, does it work on that?

Thanks katiem2, prasetio30 and mulberry1! We often neglect our roof despite it serving us every minute and every second of the day. We only notice it when in the middle of a heavy rain, water drops inside our homes.

@mulberry1: yes, you can ask from paint stores about special paints that can be used on asphalt shingles.
