Renovation and Building Materials

It was just a year ago when we renovated our house. Unfortunately whenever it starts raining like cats and dogs, we noticed water starting sip or drips from either the ceiling or wall. I don’t know if it is because the carpenters did not do a good job or the quality of the materials used in the construction were substandard. Either way, I think that both factors contributed to quick and easy damage for any roof and the walls. Therefore it is important that any kind and type of building materials used should be considered more seriously in constructing a home.

Whether you're building a new home or simply renovating, the task should be planned and mapped out carefully to ensure a satisfactory result and avoid unnecessary building expenses. One of the important things to be pondered and researched about are the building materials. As the homeowner, shopping and purchasing the right building materials for the home should not only be based on how affordable and cheap the materials are just to save money. Sometimes opting for cheap and substandard building materials you may even end up spending more money for a new renovation project and frequent repairs which can be expensive and a hassle.

If there is a part of the house which needs to be renovated, a sufficient planning for the construction project is necessary. Of course you will have to list down what probable materials and how much will be needed according to the part of the house which needs working on. If it is the roofing insulation or your roof, then you will likely use galvanized sheets. If it is just a part of the roof you will replace, perhaps one to two sheets will be needed, for the whole roof; more than two sheets will obviously be required. Cement and gravel may also be included in your list so make an approximation of the amounts you will be using too.

From this list of materials and the approximate amounts of each material, you can compute for the amount you will need to spend. You may draw or sketch what you want for your end result. A formal plan for building made by an architect or drafts-person, which would be more useful in determining the amount of materials needed. You may ask your local construction supplies store to make a quotation for your enlisted building materials or you may also search the internet for the prices. If you want to save more or if the budget is short, you may opt for second-hand materials available in the market but make sure they are still in good condition.

If you are not sure about the kind of materials to buy which are perfect for your home building requirement, you can ask your hired builder and search again from your local building material supplier or on the internet for the trusted and reliable yet affordable kinds of building materials before buying. Another thing to ask from the builder or search from online resources is building materials which can best endure the common weather and temperature range in your place.

When you buy materials from construction supplies store, they will probably provide free delivery of bulk amounts but if the materials are just a few, then you will definitely spend some amount on transportation. This should be added to the cost of the materials so you can compute for the amount of money needed for your home building or renovation project.

I'm hoping this is some years off. Home improvement is not my strong suit so I'll have to refer back here when the time comes.
