Garden and Lawn Care
68Proper garden and lawn care are necessary if you want your yard to look at its best. Most gardens we see have terrestrial plants and trees that create a refreshing and airy ambiance to the home and surroundings.
One of the most common lawn and garden care we know is lawn mowing. Grasses and turfs need to be mowed at a proper height, with the proper technique, at the right time and by using the correct tools. Maintaining the grasses at their ideal height can make your garden look excellent.
Another lawn and garden maintenance step is proper watering. Giving your lawn a single deep watering is generally better than several times of light watering. If you give the lawn up to 6 inches of water, the roots will become healthier and you would not need to water more often. Every week, the lawn would require an inch depth of water and if the weather is hot, an inch of water every three days will be needed by your lawn. You will know that you have watered enough when water starts to run off from the lawn. Water your garden either at night or in the early morning in order to reduce the occurrence of evaporation.
Your lawn’s watering needs will also depend on the type of soil that you have in your lawn. The soil around the plants must be loose enough to absorb nutrients and water. The soil surface above the root area has to have up to 2 inches of mulch for protection. This mulch will reduce soil erosion and evaporation. If you have clay soil, you can add some peat moss and compost to assist its absorption of water. For sandy soil, you can add some organic materials as supplement also for water absorption. The best soil is loam soil. It is a mixture of clay, sand and silt. It can readily absorb water which is beneficial once you have put in the plants.
Some homeowners who have trees planted in their yard resort to tree lopping. This lopping of trees means that the limbs, branches and trunks of trees are shortened. Homeowners do this due to many reasons that include prevention of excessive leaf drops or interference with television signals, etc. With tree lopping, the trees are removed of its crown and magnificent structure. Sometimes it can be advantageous for homeowners but in general, tree lopping is a harsh way of treating plants. If possible you can just do standard pruning or remove and replace the tree with a smaller plant growth.
If the trees have dead branches, you are always free to trim off that branch. Yet if you are planning to trim some fresh and alive branches, you need to do it at the proper time. Flowering trees for instance are known to set their flower blossoms about a year before blooming. If you trim the buds then the trees will definitely not bloom. The right time for tree trimming is during the 33 weeks after the flowering trees have bloomed. Remember also to prune the trees at the right places. Keep in mind not to leave stubs that may likely die and present a perfect entry for destructive insects and diseases.
