Verbal Communication Skills
75In order to be successful in life and in our chosen career, there are important skills that we need to enhance and use. One of the essential skills we need to develop is our competence in verbal communication. Not all people are born to easily communicate verbally yet this skill is something that may be acquired through different means like taking on an appropriate training course.
Skills in verbal communication allow you to speak interestingly and powerfully. When you speak well, people will listen to you and they will be willing to do what you may need them to. It is not merely using proper words when speaking but also the quality and condition of the voice. The voice can effectively indicate the speaker’s emotional state to which listeners will react accordingly.
One useful tip on improving the verbal communication skills is to vary the voice or talking speed. In essence, a fast talking speed if for making the listener feel excited while a slow speed in talking could make them anticipate and feel anxious. When you speak at a single and similar pace every time, your listeners will tend to feel bored and ignore you.
Speaking continuously will not only be boring to the listeners. In addition, this will also not provide them with an opportunity to absorb your words. Thus it is important that you pause so you can also add impact to whatever you will say. Pauses give the listener the time to think and process the heard information. When you pause, the listener will more or less anticipate for other things that you will speak about. Up to 3 seconds will already be adequate time for your pause.
The pitch of the voice will also be an aspect to consider with verbal communications. A low-pitched voice is known to project a sense of authority, dominance and power. It can demand respect from the listener. A high-pitched voice is generally associated with weakness, femininity, submissiveness or even homosexuality.
An essential skill in verbal communication is the ability to use appropriate volume of your voice. Impact when speaking is usually achieved by using a voice that is easily and comfortably heard by the listener. Too loud volume can irritate and annoy listeners while a very soft volume can express shyness and thus cause you to lose authority over your listeners. Moderate voice can ensure understanding between you and your listeners.
Then there is the aspect of being articulate. You must speak with utmost clarity whereby your words will be understood. When you speak sloppily and you pronounce words incorrectly, chances are your listeners will get distracted. When you speak and you wish to be understood, articulate your words, phrases and sentences correctly to produce clear and crisp messages that will suggest intelligence, competence and confidence.
All these essential skills and a lot more will be taught to you in a communication skills training course. Speaking coherently will be utilized in all aspects of life, may it be with regards to your work or family and personal relationships.
